Along with their well established programme of piano, guitar, strings, woodwind, drums and kindermusic, new initiatives under the Music Generation Programme will commence in the uilleann pipes (in association with Na Piobairi Uilleann), harp and brass (including trumpet, trombone, tuba, French horn and euphonium).

The introduction of these instruments will compliment and enhance the provision under Laois School of Music and will be a great addition in time to the LSM’s Orchestral and Ensemble programme.

To demonstrate the new range of instruments, an open evening will be held in Portlaoise College on Thursday September 13 from 6pm to 7.30pm. Interested pupils of all ages and parents can come along to hear the various instruments played and meet the new tutors who will be working with Music Generation and the Laois School of Music.

Gallagher uilleann pipes(Photo credit: rocks & pipes)Rural development organisation LEADER East has said that they are ‘open for business’ and have called on SMEs in their area to contact them.

It made the call following a report by ISME which stated that nearly half of small businesses that applied for bank loans had their applications rejected. LEADER East represents development companies in 11 counties in the east of Ireland.

LEADER is an EU initiative which provides a total of €425m in funding to companies, start-ups and initiatives in food, agriculture, tourism, technology, creative industries and the green and community sectors.

Commenting on the the ISME findings, Justin Larkin, spokesman, LEADER East, said: "It is regrettable that small to medium businesses are still finding it difficult to access credit from banks. However, the LEADER programme is open for business and continues to fund a wide range of community and private sector businesses.
