This year’s recipient of TG4 Lifetime Achievement Award The Pipers Association of Ireland (Cumann na bPíobairi Uilleann) has invited well-known Derry flautist and teacher Marcas Ó Murchú to deliver their May lecture.
These lectures are a series of monthly performance-based lectures on traditional music, song and dance by some of Ireland’s finest traditional artists.
The topic will be “Irish musicians in 20th century USA - some aspects of their human story”.
Marcas, who’s been based in Derry for the past two decade and teaches at St Columb’s College, is no stranger to the traditional music scene in the US. He has travelled throughout the country on five occasions, including several Comhaltas trips with Michael Flatley on behalf of the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs and Bord Fáilte, when both in their early twenties.
On St Patrick’s Day two years ago, Marcas performed to an international audience Áras an Uachtarán for President Mary Mc Aleese, who is a fellow Belfast native.
The venue for his return to Dublin to deliver this highly-regarded lecture is 15 Henrietta Street, and it will take place on Friday May 17th, commencing 8.30pm. Admission is €10 (Concession €5). More information is available from

Marcas told the Journal he’s very looking forward to the lecture and to the rest of this year which sees Comhaltas bring the Fleadh Cheoil in Derry for the first time.
“As a musician who has attended the Fleadh annually since I was sixteen, I hope that the event in Augustbrings a new level of musical enjoyment to people here and I am sure that the broadening of understanding of shared heritages will bring a new depth to the cultural life to this very historic city.
